Ear infections are common and can happen to people of all ages, but they are especially common in young children. Most of the time, they are caused by infections in the middle ear, which is the area behind the eardrum. Some of the most common types of ear infections and how to treat them are listed below.
Acute otitis media (AOM):
AOM is an infection of the middle ear caused by bacteria. It usually happens after a cold or flu. There may be a pain in the ear, a fever, and trouble hearing. Antibiotics, painkillers, and ear drops may all be used to treat an ear infection.
Otitis media with effusion (OME):
OME is a buildup of fluid in the middle ear that can occur after an AOM infection. Symptoms may include muffled hearing and mild discomfort. In most cases, OME resolves on its own without treatment, but in some cases, ear tubes may be needed to drain the fluid.
Swimmer’s ear:
Swimmer’s ear is an infection of the ear canal that is caused by bacteria that thrive in moist places. Ear pain, itching, and discharge are all signs. Ear drops and painkillers may be used to treat the problem.
Chronic otitis media:
Chronic otitis media is an infection of the middle ear that lasts for a long time and can damage the ear in a way that can’t be fixed. Hearing loss, ringing in the ear, and discharge are all signs. Antibiotics and surgery might be used to fix any damage to the ear.
Mastoiditis:
Mastoiditis is an infection of the bone behind the ear caused by bacteria. There may be a fever, pain in the ear, and swelling behind the ear. Antibiotics may be used to treat an infection, and in severe cases, surgery may be needed to drain the infection.
Ear infections are usually treated with a combination of antibiotics, painkillers, and ear drops. It’s important to take your medications as your doctor tells you to and to finish the full course of antibiotics, even if your symptoms get better before the medicine is done. You might also feel better with home remedies like warm compresses or over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
If you or your child has signs of an ear infection, you should see a doctor right away to avoid complications and make sure you get better quickly.
