Nosebleeds, which are also called epistaxis, are common and usually happen when the tiny blood vessels in the nose get irritated or broken. Even though most nosebleeds are nothing to worry about, they can be scary and painful. Here are some ways to treat nosebleeds and keep them from happening.

Treating Nosebleeds

Stay Calm:

Nosebleeds can be scary, but it’s important to stay calm and relaxed. Stress can raise blood pressure, which can make the bleeding worse.

Pinch the Nose:

Put pressure with your thumb and index finger on the soft part of your nose just below the bridge. Hold this position and breathe through your mouth for 10–15 minutes.

Lean Forward:

Lean slightly forward and hold your nose. This will help keep blood from running down the back of your throat.

Apply Ice:

Apply a cold compress or ice pack to your nose or forehead. This can help constrict blood vessels and slow down the bleeding.

Use a Nasal Spray:

Use a nasal spray with a decongestant like oxymetazoline to help the blood vessels shrink and stop bleeding.

Preventing Nosebleeds

Humidify:

Dry air can make the inside of the nose dry out and make it more likely to bleed. Use a humidifier, especially in the winter, to add moisture to the air.

Keep Your Nose Moist:

Use a thin layer of petroleum jelly or saline nasal spray to keep the inside of your nose from drying out.

Avoid Nose Picking:

When you pick your nose, you can hurt the small blood vessels inside, which can cause you to bleed.

Be Gentle:

Be gentle and don’t blow too hard when you blow your nose. This can also irritate the skin and make it bleed.

Protect Your Nose:

If you are doing something that could hurt your nose, like sports or do-it-yourself projects, wear protective gear, like a helmet or nose guard.

Some nosebleeds may need to be checked out by a doctor, especially if they happen often, are heavy, or are accompanied by other symptoms like feeling dizzy or fainting. If you are worried about your nosebleeds or they keep happening, you should talk to a doctor or nurse.
